Finding the Best Medicine: DiscoBAX Helps Scientists Discover the Perfect Treatments!

This research was done with the help of multiple researchers including Clare Lyle, Arash Mehrjou, Pascal Notin, Andrew Jesson, Stefan Bauer, Yarin Gal, and Patrick Schwab. It was published at ICML 2023 Poster in July 2023.

The Old Way of Discovering Medicines

In the past drug discovery was done manually by researchers and it was a long process. As scientists use, many methods to test various chemical compounds to find the best drugs for specific diseases. Each experiment was done in big labs and required multiple resources including funding, time, and a skilled researcher. The traditional approach to drug discovery was challenging for researchers.

Scientists used to rely on limited knowledge and intuition that particular drugs will be effective for specific diseases. However, finding effective drugs were relatively low because less number of compound can be tested at a time. The manual approach used by scientists lacks advanced technology and data-driven approaches and this process was costly and slow.

Scientists use powerful AI tools such as an advanced model known as DiscoBAX that can make smarter decisions about which experiment to conduct to treat specific diseases. It contains a vast amount of data and performs analysis on that to see which drug is effective. It saves a lot of time and resources because scientists don’t have to test all compounds manually. Now they are more focused on their efforts to find promising candidates.
